At the end of 2024, I was approached by EKKO, a nightclub and cultural place in Utrecht, to create a series of artworks. These were part of a series of lectures that explored themes within the music industry, with a focus on DJs, the club and nightlife, and music production.
For the artworks, I wanted to capture the intensity of nightlife—the absurd characters you encounter, the overwhelming sensation of the bass vibrating through every fiber of your body, the sea of flashing lights and vibrant colors, and the crowd in which you can momentarily lose yourself.
The freedom I had in the design process sparked a curiosity about the identity of my work. I drew inspiration from early 2D Disney animations and comics. I aimed to create spatial environments you could get lost in—not defined by hard lines, but by forms with weight and volume using light and shadow. I asked myself: how can I capture a moving scene in a still image? I explored the illusion of motion by placing the various elements throughout the space, treating the flat surface as if it were in fact a three-dimensional space.
